How does Bravecto work?

The active ingredients

Bravecto dog tablets and topical solution contain the same main active ingredient: fluralaner, an insecticide (to kill fleas) and an acaricide (to kill ticks). Insecticides and acaricides are commonly used in varying doses in the fields of medicine and agriculture.

The active ingredient, fluralaner is generally well tolerated by pets. Bravecto (fluralaner) is an isoxazoline, a new and specific blocker of insect ligand-dependent chloride channels. Isoxazoline has been the first new class of insecticides for over a decade.  Bravecto is the only isoxazoline which lasts 12 weeks. This reduces potential gaps in protection and provides greater efficiency in controlling ticks and fleas.

Once you have given BRAVECTO to your furry friend, the tablet quickly touches the tissue fluids under your dog or cat's skin. So when fleas and ticks feed, they ingest Bravecto and die. Bravecto for dogs begins to kill fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) within 2 hours and kills ticks (Ixodes ricinus) within 12 hours. Bravecto for dogs eliminates fleas, prevents possible flea infestations and kills existing ticks (blacklegged tick, American dog tick and brown dog tick) for 12 weeks. Bravecto for dogs also kills lone star ticks for 8 weeks. Bravecto is not effective against Amblyomma americanum ticks beyond 8 weeks after administration.

Flea and tick treatment can kill:

  • Fleas (12 weeks)
  • Blacklegged ticks (12 weeks)
  • American dog ticks (12 weeks)
  • Solitary ticks (8 weeks)

Bravecto duration of action

Bravecto chewable tablets can be used in dogs from 8 weeks and weighing from 2 kg. A single tablet will provide protection for 12 weeks in dogs and puppies.

You can start veterinary treatment with Bravecto at any time of the year and continue it all year round without interruption.

Interactions with other treatments

Clinical trials have been carried out in the field with dogs given Bravecto along with other commonly used medications. No adverse effects were noted when using Bravecto simultaneously with other drugs. However, your veterinarian is your pet's health care expert, so it's always best to discuss all of your pet's treatments with them, whether prescription or over-the-counter supplements.

Fluralaner is strongly bound to plasma proteins and may compete with other strongly bound drugs such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and warfarin, a derivative of cumarin. Incubation of fluralaner in the presence of carprofen or warfarin in the dog's plasma to the maximum expected did not reduce the protein binding of fluralaner, carprofen or warfarin.
